Placing your pup in a kennel or in a dog run may seem like cruel and unusual punishment, but this simply isn’t the case. In fact, dogs feel most secure when they are inside of an enclosed environment. Many, many, years ago (before dogs were domesticated), wild dogs slept soundly and securely inside of dark and damp caves or dens. When you use a dog kennel or dog run to train your puppy, you’ll not only find that your puppy responds better, but you’ll also discover that housetraining is a lot easier. You’ll also discover that placing a dog run in your backyard is a great way for your pup to get exercise without worrying about traffic or a wandering dog.

Now that you know why you should use a dog kennel or crate, let’s talk about the kind of kennel you should purchase. There are two basic types of dog kennels and dog runs on the market: plastic and wire. Plastic kennels are a lot cheaper than wire kennels, but plastic isn’t always the best choice. Since plastic can break when faced with a sudden impact, wire is usually a better option like a chain link dog kennel.

Almost all dog runs on the market are made from steel. Only, the quality of steel that you can purchase may greatly fluctuate from company to company. When shopping for a steel crate or dog run, make sure to buy one that is rust-proof and made from 100% steel. Any runs or kennels that have aluminum parts should be avoided, since aluminum can easily break. You may even want to look for a collapsible kennel if you plan to do a lot of traveling.

No matter what kind of kennel or run you purchase, make sure that you clean any enclosure on a regular basis. Dog runs should be cleaned inside and out at least once per week (don’t forget to clean the bottom and sides of a dog run). Kennels should also be cleaned regularly to avoid bacteria and debris. Once you have a dog run or a kennel in your life, you’ll never want to go back! Remember, there’s nothing cruel about crating your dog – in fact, most dogs prefer a crate to any other kind of enclosure!
