Teaching Dog to “Come” in a Crowd

Teaching Dog to "Come" in a Crowd

Practicing "Come" with dog in a crowd. Have a group of people without dogs mingle around in a moderately sized area. One by one have the dog trainers and their dogs walk through the crowd with the dog at "Heel" and then once they have passed to the other side of the crowd, the dog trainer should have the dog sit and stay. Then the dog trainer walks back through the crowd and when they reach the other side they should give the command to "Come" and the dog should obey quickly without becoming overly distracted with the other people. Keep the waiting dogs a good distance away so that they don't become an additional distraction to the dog that is involved in doing the exercise.

Practicing "Come" around groups of picnickers. Have an individuals and small groups of people sitting around just like you would find in the park or at the beach on the weekend. They could be eating, sun bathing, having a picnic or playing ball. With the dog at "Heel" one team passes through and

around the groups of seated people. When the team reaches a moderate distance from the groups of people the dog trainer should give the command to "Sit" and "Stay" and then walk back through the groups to the other side. Upon reaching the other side the dog trainer should give the command to "Come" and the dog should obey quickly and without becoming overly distracted with the groups of people and what they are doing. Keep the waiting dogs a good distance away so that they don't become an additional distraction to the dog that is involved in doing the exercise.

Practicing "Come" through a group of sitting dogs. Have about eight dogs sit in an area but without any particular order. The trainers should stand some distance away. One by one the dog trainers should take their dog and passing through the sitting dogs have their dog sit and stay on the outside of the group of dogs. Then the dog trainer passes back through the group of sitting dogs and at the signal from the course instructor gives the command to "Come" and the dog should obey quickly without becoming over distracted by the sitting dogs. The next dog and trainer should follow suit.
