How to train your puppy to stay still

Teach New Puppy to Staying Still

When your dog already know how to sit and lie down when you ask him too, you can teach him to stay that way as long as you would like him too, waiting for you too give him his treat.

  • Say "sit!" or "lie down!", count until five make noise and then give him his treat. If he stands up before you got to five then say again "sit!" or "lie down!" and start counting again.
  • Say "sit!" or "lie down!", count until ten make the noise and then give him his treat.
  • Say "sit!" or "lie down!", count until two make the noise and then give him his treat.
  • Say "sit!" or "lie down!", count until 30 make the noise and then give him a real big treat.

Keep your puppy sitting or lying down for different periods of times. Go making them longer from 30 seconds up to 2 minutes. Never stop praising him and telling him how good he is behaving. If you see that to keep him lying down for stay stillover 30 seconds is too much then add still to the command. When you make the magic noise, your dog will know that he already did what you asked of him, and doesn't have to stay still any longer. Remember that when you make the noise when the dog is still sitting or lying down and you should wait a couple of seconds before giving him his candy.
