Control Dog Barking ProblemA consequence in this case can be compared with chastisement, so on it's own it will only stop the dog's behavior, but it does not teach your dog what he should be doing instead. For dogs that endlessly bark, you could try using something to interfere the barking. If you manage to do this for a little than he can be rewarded for being quiet. Some consequences that work well as interruptions consist of a loud sudden noise, shaking a tin can full of nails, a squirt of water, or a non electric no-bark collar (which is something a dog wears around his neck and it distracts the dog by giving a blast of citronella when he is barking). Once you have figured out how to get your dog to stop the barking, plan what the dog should be doing instead beforehand. By doing this you will know what behavior to support.Notice the right dog behavior: We often times only tend to notice when our dogs are barking and not when they are being quiet. Part of the barking solution is praising and acknowledging the dog when he is being quiet. Each time you do this, you are encouraging him to be quieter more often. You can pay attention to your dog by petting him, playing with him, letting him inside, or letting him out, or whatever works. You will begin to notice that he barks less within a few weeks or days (depending on the amount of reinforcement and on how severe the situation is to begin with). Set up for Success |
