Dogs and their sense of taste

Dogs and their sense of taste

Even though it hasn't been studied thoroughly, it's sense of taste is closely linked to it's sense of smell, which without a doubt, influences it's preference for certain types of food. It's tongue lets the dog perceive foods flavor. It also has two other functions; on one hand, it uses it's great mobility to drink water, on the other it helps to cool the dog because of evaporation when it's panting. Therefore the tongue makes up for the lack of sweat glands.

A note on dog vision
Dogs feel the vision without it moving it's head, depending on the position of it's eyes and of it's head, is between 200-270 degrees, while mans' is only 100. It's seeing capability is much more limited. It's visual capacity is inversely proportional to brightness, because of the reflecting layer in the back of the eye makes them sparkle when light falls on them. This way it's able to perceive movements in complete darkness. It's sense of smell indicates that something's moving and through it perceives it's surroundings.

A dog reacts to movements: when the dog is coming up to it's owner with the wind behind it's back, meaning, when the dog can smell something it trusts it's eyes. Dogs are naturally farsighted and therefore is capable of perceiving movements, which is a clear inheritance from wolves. If its' owner stands still the dog will only recognize him from a certain distance and hunters take advantage of that capability.
