Canine Breeds Information

Canine breeds: Dog breeders have the biggest part in the intentional selection of certain physical traits of dogs, having practically created the hundreds of breeds we have nowadays. Following are some of the different types of breeds that exist around the world. All of the breeds mentioned are adequate as pets; however, not all breeds are appropriate for people with little or no experience with dogs. Some dogs are not appropriate for children and some have a big need for a lot of physical exercise, outside space, etc, and it is necessary to consider all of these things and think about whether or not you live in a place where you can adequately provide everything your dog needs. You wouldn't want to get a big active dog and expect him to live in a small apartment all day since he would most likely end up frustrated and sad. Whether you choose a pure breed or a mix, there are advantages and disadvantages in both depending on what you prefer. Pure breeds have the disadvantage of being more delicate health wise and often times get the physical defects their family had, and many times they pass these problems on to each descendant. The only effective way of avoiding physical and mental problems from passing on, is to take the dog to get checked before deciding to use him or her as a reproducer. Mixed dogs (or mutts) have less genetic uniqueness in them and this diminishes the chances of these dogs having hereditary problems. Another advantage to mutts (or mixed dogs) is that they tend to be healthier, stronger, and more loyal. 

Picking out a breed: Before choosing a pure breed, keep these things in mind:

• There are some breeds that are more likely to suffer from hereditary defects than others. Keep yourself informed.
• If you are interested in acquiring a specific breed, talk to your veterinarian about the type of defects that breed is likely to get and on how to recognize the beginning stages of these.
• Make sure you get your dog from a reputable breeder. Ask the breeder to show you antecedents and paperwork.
• Make sure the parents of the puppy you are intending on getting, do not suffer from any hereditary defects. If this specific breed is likely to get hip dysphasia, ask the breeder to give you a copy of the AOF certificate. (For people living in the USA).
• Don't let yourself be lead by the looks of the dog only. The best way of knowing if a dog is going to suffer from a behavior problem is by observing the temperament of the parents of the puppy before acquiring it. Don't choose a timid or fearful puppy.
