Flea allergy dermatitis

Postby skblues » Wed May 23, 2007 4:38 am

My cat was a semi-stray (neglected neighbor's cat) that I adopted about seven months ago. He was thin and lived almost exclusively outside; he had never been to the vet and he was about 2-3 years old. My neighbor moved away and I adopted the cat. I got him a complete vet checkup: shots, tests, neutered, etc. A couple months later I noticed he started biting and scratching constantly, and licking off patches of fur. I brought him to the vet, who gave him a steroid shot, and it worked almost instantly. But six weeks later, the licking and biting and fur loss resumed. He had another shot, a new diet, and a visit to an animal allergist who diagnosed a flea allergy and prescribed Advantage (I had been using Revolution) and to never let him outside again. Unfortunately, I can't keep him inside because he becomes anxious and aggressive. He's simply lived outside his whole three years. But now the constant scratching is back, and I can't continue paying for steriod shots every six weeks (the allergist also said this wasn't a viable long-term solution). And I am nearly at my wits' end. Any experience with flea allergy dermatitis? Suggestions (and support!) would be very welcome. I don't know what else to look for. Any good topical remedies? Susan

Hi Skblues,

Welcome to seeFIDO Cats!

How long have you attempted to keep him indoors? Really the only solution is to keep the fleas off of him... When he is outdoors, does he stay in your yard? Have you considered having your yard treated?
